They followed me to Shadow Drive. I had assumed it was always a possibility that the police might want to look around the house, but now that it was happening, I was more nervous than Iâd expected. This drive, I realized, might be one of my last moments of freedom.
I pulled into the driveway of 8160, the police right behind me. They did it because there was nowhere else to park, I assured myself, but I couldnât help but feel like they were deliberately pinning me in.
I got out. Kniess and Chami stepped out of their car and looked at the house.
I pulled the keys out of my pocket and walked up to the front door. Pete had installed the new doorknobs and locks weâd bought from Home Depot, and I had taken the old key off my key chain and replaced it with the new one. I was worried it might seem too shiny and cause suspicion, but they werenât looking at the key or at me. I opened the door.
Kniess and Chami followed me in and examined the dismantled house, the naked studs, the piles of debris.
âRemodeling it,â I said. âPutting in new drywall. The old sheets had cracked a lot.â
I was nervous but doing my best to conceal my feelings. I was reminded of being at parties with Anya. When she was drunk, and I wasnât. When she would flirt with guys to get a rise out of me, and I had to stand there and act like I wasnât bothered. I did it to avoid a fight, to avoid making a scene. Now, I would have to conceal my panic to avoid going to prison.
Kniess and Chami moved through the debris. Even though it was daytime, Chami used a flashlight to look around. He walked carefully, scanning the space in front of him.
I followed them into the dining room, and Kniess turned to me.
âYou mind waiting by the front door?â
âUm, sure.â
I walked back to the front door and stood there as they moved around the house. They turned over chunks of drywall with their feet. They opened cabinets. They crouched down and examined the floor.
I looked out at the neighborhood. There was some drop of blood somewhere, I was sure of it. Even though Pete and I had tried to clean up, it was unlikely in a house so messy that weâd been able to erase all traces of what weâd done. It made sense that Kniess had asked me to stay by the front door out of some protocol, but I began to suspect that they might already have some evidence of my involvement in the disappearance. They might be telling me to stay back because they thought Iâd obstruct their search.
They moved into the kitchen. Chami looked out at the backyard. Would he find the fresh sod suspicious? Would he even notice it? Kniess looked at the open basement doorway. Pete and I had removed the cut-up metal door and moved it into the garage.
