Abbie

"I thought you might need this." Zeke reached into his suitcase and pulled out something.

"How did you have my phone?" I took it from him and looked it over. It didn't have any damage, as far as I could see. Thank fuck for that. My bank account was still not healthy enough to afford a new phone. Honestly, every dollar the label gave me so far had gone on outstanding bills.

I don't mean outstanding in the good way. I came painfully close to having to declare bankruptcy. If it wasn't for Levi Jones, I would have been screwed.

"We found it on a bench in the park," Zeke said. "I presume that was when you bumped into my dear brothers." Apparently a night of fucking and sleep hadn't dimmed his anger.

"Yes, it was." I tried to suppress a shudder but failed. Every time I thought about yesterday, my stomach twisted and my whole body wanted to freeze up. I guessed this was why Zeke wanted me to learn how to use a gun. If I froze with a weapon in my hand, things wouldn't end well. An assailant might take it and use it on me.

"Can you guys teach me self-defence?" I asked. "Realistically, you can't watch me twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week."

"Yes, we can. Even if we have to take turns having a shower with you." He smiled.

"What a chore," I said ironically. "Am I still allowed to go to the toilet by myself?"

"I want to say no, but I have a feeling you would punch me in the face if I did." He leaned his upper body back as if he was actually scared of that possibility.

"I wouldn't punch you in the face," I told him. "I'd hurt my hand. I can't rule out throwing things at you though."

He chuckled. "Maybe we shouldn't teach you self-defence. You might use it against me." He raised his arm in front of his face.

"I think you're confusing defence with offence," I said. "I wouldn't mind learning how to throw a few kicks and punches. It's got to be better than receiving them."

He put his arms around me and drew me to him until my face rested against his chest. "If I have it my way, no one will throw punches, or anything else, at you. Not physically or verbally. They sure as fuck won't be drugging you and dragging you away again."

"I too have a preference for me not being drugged and dragged away," I said. "Being that vulnerable is…" I shook my head. "It was scary as hell." They could have done literally anything to me, and I would have been powerless to stop them.

A tiny voice in the back of my mind asked if maybe they did something while I was asleep. I silenced that fucker. If they had, I’d be sore and sticky when I woke, and I was neither.

He stroked my hair. "Did…" He started hesitantly. "Did they do anything other than what you've told me already?" He pulled back and looked me in the eyes.
