Ellie

This was one of the worst weeks Ellie had ever had. Irons wasn’t kidding when he said he was going to make her get his coffee and file his paperwork and other mundane tasks any first year could do. Not that he would trust a first year in his lab - he constantly reminded her how he barely trusted her - but still.

However, there were flashes in time when she was alone with important data, things she could use to look into what they were doing and report back to Ethan. There was supposed to be a debriefing soon, from what Tom said, but so far, no mention of when that would occur. Regardless, Ellie wanted to be ready.

She took as many pictures as she could without being obvious. The problem was, there was always some research assistant present. All of them were female, except a handful, and all were pretty. It annoyed her more than she cared to admit, and she didn’t understand why she cared, which pissed her off even more.

Saturday morning, Irons instructed her to wake up at the crack of dawn to have coffee for him ready so when he got to the lab, it would be waiting for him. She envisioned dumping the scalding coffee over his head, just to mess up his hair, and smiled. It was the only thing fueling her consciousness as she strolled into the lab that morning.

The break room was always cold, which was why Ellie was dressed in an oversized sweater and leggings. As much as she wanted to wear her sun dress, it was getting difficult to do. She knew Michigan saw all four seasons, but experiencing them was different. It felt weird wearing pants that weren’t pajamas. At least she had a skirt as part of her uniform. After starting the coffee, she pulled her hair over her shoulder and started to braid it. She didn’t think Irons actually needed anything from her today. If anything, he was going out of his way to be a dick, ensuring she woke up super early for one task and one task only.

“...spend the night with Irons,” a voice said.

“Shut up,” another voice responded. “No, she didn’t. They already had their thing. You know Irons doesn’t do sloppy seconds.”

“That’s what she said.”

“She’s a liar. I bet she said he kissed her too, right?”

A snort. “She didn’t go that far,” the first voice said. “I mean -”

They were suddenly cut off by something. Ellie glanced up and realized both women were staring at her, amused smiles on their faces.

“Like I said,” the first one continued, her eyes never leaving Ellie. “That would be like saying he slept with a student, and we all know he has his rules, he has his lines he would never cross, even if she thinks he would.”
