No matter what you have gone through, just know this . . .

On the other side of doubt

and pain

and questions

is hope.

But you have to keep pushing through, otherwise you’ll be stuck in the mess forever.

Use the pain and become stronger.

Use the doubt and learn more.

Use the past season to push you forward into a healthy new season.

We need to learn how to be grateful for where we’ve been and hopeful for where we are going.

I spent a week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a few years back with an incredible group of people. A few guys from my city invited us to go on adventures together and talk about Jesus. I was sold.

My friend Matt and I went out there together; no matter the itinerary, we were ready to conquer it. And conquer it we did.

Day one: fly fishing.

Day two: horseback riding.

Day three: hiking.

It was on day three when the trip began to conquer me.

Our group met at 7 a.m. to hike up the Grand Tetons. It was a dream morning. We tied our hiking boots extra tight, put on an extra layer of clothes, and were off. The peak we decided to hike up that day was roughly forty-five minutes to the top, passing deer and other wildlife on the way.

If you’ve ever been to the top of a mountain, it’s the most breathtaking view, being able to look across the various peaks and valleys.

It’s peaceful summed up in a snapshot.

Our guide gave the group a two-hour span of free time to either explore or pray. A group of five of us came to the conclusion that the best thing we could do was hike down to the lake in the middle of the mountain range and go for a dip, even though there was a light snowfall dusting the air.

On our way down to the lake, we heard one of the other guys yell from the distance, “BEAR!”

So we all stopped. My heart was racing. And all ten of our eyes scanned the scenery for any sort of movement. Then, about twenty yards away, a small brown bear walked by, most likely trying to find his mother.

We kept going and eventually made it to the sand beach between two mountaintops. The crystal water was magical.

I’m not going to lie, at this point I was on the verge of chickening out. It was cold. And remember, I really don’t like being cold and wet.

Well, three of the guys convinced me to go in, while my friend Matt stayed on dry land shooting a video of the experience.

We all stripped down to our underwear and took off running. My plan was to go in only a few feet because the water was freezing, but the momentum kept me moving until I was fully submerged. At one point, my knee buckled for some reason, but I couldn’t tell why because my feet were numb.

When we got back to shore, I looked at the ground, and there was blood spilling out of my foot.
