Much of the evangelical involvement in political issues has been little more than drawing a line of defense against the encroachment of secularism. For the most part, evangelicals have not advocated taking rights away from secularists or humanists. Conservatives have merely insisted that secularists not deny their rights to live by the moral values and principles they believe to be valid. For example, evangelicals are not calling for the elimination of existing rights for anyone. They simply oppose extending those rights to include the imposition of a nonbiblical morality upon the church or church-related institutions.

If we do not draw a line of defense at this point of the debate, we will end up sacrificing everything we believe in the area of public policy. This does not mean that the church cannot survive in a hostile society. In some cases, as in ancient pagan Rome and modern atheistic communism, true Christianity has actually flourished. In other cases, such as under the sword of Islam, it has been eradicated.

Conservative Christians are merely calling the church to awaken to its responsibilities in this opening part of the twenty-first century. There is no excuse for us to lose our religious freedoms in a democratic society. If this does happen, we will have no one to blame but ourselves. The irrelevance of a privatized pietism is as dangerous to the health of Christianity as is the apathy of a self-indulgent church.

Whether we like it or not, we have come to religion’s last stand in American culture. The political debate is the final attempt of secularism to prevail over religion in our society. The implications of this debate have eternal consequences. For secularism, all human values must be understood in the present, whereas the biblical world-view is eternal. R. C. Sproul rightly observes, “This is precisely where Christianity and secularism collide. This is the point of conflict.”29 Sproul observes that “right now” counts forever in Christianity. What we do has eternal significance because our existence is related to God Himself.
