Chapter 39

Thomas

I wrote the check and handed it to the bail clerk before taking a seat and waiting for Jenson to be brought out. I was just a little too familiar with this process. Although it was Oliver who had the most experience on this side of the glass. He’d always been our go-to when we got in trouble.

Jenson came out about fifteen minutes later. He looked like shit. I didn’t miss the black eye. His shirt was wrinkled and there was an ugly stain on the bottom. I got to my feet and shook my head as I looked at him. I said nothing to him as we walked to my car.

Once we were in the privacy of my car, I dropped the silent treatment. “What the hell?” I growled. “Look at you. Have you seen yourself?”

“Uh, they don’t exactly provide mirrors in the drunk tank,” he replied with a laugh.

“Are you ever going to find a way to stay out of trouble?” I asked him.

“Trouble is my middle name,” he said with yet another laugh.

“This isn’t funny, Jenson! Seriously, do you want to go to prison? Do you want to die? I just don’t understand what you’re going for here.”

I drove toward his apartment. It was a rundown piece of shit but it was where he chose to live.

“I’m not trying to die,” he said. “I very much like living. I live life to the fullest.”

“You’re reckless,” I told him. “You act like you’re twenty. You’re not. It’s time for you to grow up. This isn’t funny anymore. Oliver and I are not always going to be around to save you from yourself.”

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“I’m taking you home,” I told him.

“Uh, no, you’re not.”

“I’m not taking you anywhere else where you can get into trouble,” I said. “I’m not going to contribute to your delinquency.”

“No, you’re not taking me home because I don’t have one,” he said.

I whipped the car into the parking lot of a drug store and looked at him. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“I got evicted a week ago. I’ve been couch surfing.”

“Where in the hell is all your shit?” I asked.

“Here and there. I have a storage unit as well.”

I stayed where I was. “Where exactly am I supposed to take you?” I asked him.

He shrugged. “You’ve got a big-ass place. I’ll crash there.”

“The hell you will,” I said.

“Dude, you can’t just leave me in the cold.”

“It’s eighty degrees,” I shot back. “You won’t be cold.”

“That isn’t funny.”

“You are a grown-ass man. I’m not interested in supporting you for the rest of your days. You have to grow up.”

“I will. I am.”

I shook my head. “No, you are not. You don’t even have a place to live. Aren’t you tired of this life?”

“I’m trying,” he argued.

“No, you are not trying. You don’t give a shit. I don’t know what it is you are waiting for, but you are never going to find it at this point. You are in a never-ending cycle of destruction.
