CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Maude found the entrance of the cave leading to the Mirror Pool easily enough. Everly had been right once again. Her newly awakened fire witch senses knew exactly where Dolan was, and led her right to him.

Including around the rockslide that wasn’t a rockslide at all. Sneaky dragons and their deterrents.

She hesitated anyway. Dolan’s brother was trapped in that cave, and she wasn’t sure if she was intruding on something she shouldn’t. Dolan had told her he was going up to sit with Rawley for a bit, to keep him company, let him know he wasn’t alone.

This was a very strange way to meet your boyfriend’s family.

Boyfriend? Was that even the right word?

The path into the cavern opened up soon enough, and her gaze went to him like he was the sun itself.

Or maybe that was because a shaft of sunlight coming down through the Howling Rock above caught Dolan as it reflected off the eerily smooth surface of the Pool.

They’d described it to her. And what had happened here. Since then, they’d constructed a wooden bridge, just a few feet wide, across the Pool, not trusting it enough to step foot on.

She made her way to one side and carefully put a foot on the first board. Dolan watched her, letting her take whatever time she needed, from where he sat at the center of the bridge, his feet dangling off the edge, almost touching the locked surface of the Mirror Pool.

It took her a few moments, the bridge giving just a little under her weight, the boards creaking with a few of her steps. It wasn’t meant to be a permanent structure. They hadn’t wanted it to last even this long, she knew.

But it seemed sturdy enough. And as long as the Pool didn’t suddenly turn liquid again, there was only a few feet to fall.

The rope strung a yard or so above the walkway was fastened to the rock walls at either side of the cavern. She gripped it in her right hand as she made her way to Dolan.

“Hello, there,” he said, cheerful, but subdued.

It was a subdued kind of place.

“Hi,” she said back, though it was a bit pathetic of a response.

He wrapped an arm around her and squeezed as he kissed her temple. “Have any trouble finding the way up?”

“Not really. I did have to consult Everly’s map once. The find-your-mate feature seems to be working well, but I don’t think I’ve quite worked out the user error yet.” She smiled at him, carefully not looking into the Pool in front of them.

She knew what was there, but she hadn’t yet seen.

She wasn’t sure she was ready.

“So there’s a shadow flying around behind us,” Dolan said. The corner of his mouth twitched as he fought a grin.

“What?” Maude asked, glancing over her shoulder quickly, then, when Dolan pressed his lips hard to keep from laughing, she looked again.

It took a moment to catch it, but there, darting between the sconces on the wall and a bowl burning bright with fire in an alcove, was a dark shadow, moving fast.
