The four new ‘Tide’ class tankers are being built by DSME in Korea before outfitting with sensitive equipment by A&P Group’s yard in Falmouth. Construction has been delayed but the first, Tidespring, arrived in the River Fal early in April 2017. (Crown Copyright 2017)
The RFA operates three ‘Bay’ class landing ships. One – currently Lyme Bay – is used as an afloat forward support base (aka ‘mother ship’) for British and allied (typically two US Navy Avenger class) minehunters in the Arabian Gulf. This role may disappear when HMS Jufair commissions in November 2017 but current plans are to retain all three ships in service for at least another ten years.
The final member of the RFA fleet is Argus. Commissioned in 1988, she has a dual role as an aviation training ship and primary casualty treatment ship. She is due to start a major refit in early 2018 to extend her life beyond 2020.
The MOD also has access to up to four (originally six) ‘Point’ class strategic sealift ships. Operated by Foreland Shipping Ltd, they are made available for commercial use when not required by the MOD.
Finally, since 2003 the chartered MV Maersk Rapier has been used by the MOD for the bulk transport of fuel.
