An AW-101 helicopter in Marina Militare markings. Both Italian FREMM configurations can deploy and support one of these helicopters in addition to a smaller NH90 type. (AgustaWestland)

A MILAS anti-submarine missile seen during checkout after assembly. Similar to the US Navy’s ASROC, this can deploy a MU-90 lightweight torpedo out to 35km within three minutes of launch. Each Italian FREMM completed in antisubmarine configuration has four MILAS launchers. (MBDA)

Helicopters and Ship’s Boats: Both Italian FREMM versions can operate up to two helicopters. A normal maximum complement is either two of Airbus Helicopters’ medium-sized NH90 or one NH90 and one, heavier AgustaWestland AW-101. The frigates are equipped with two separate hangars to house these aircraft, that to the starboard being significantly larger so as to house an AW-101. The Italian Navy operates both types in anti-submarine and utility variants, with the former being equipped with dipping sonar and armed with MU-90 torpedoes and Marte air-to-surface missiles.11 The flight deck incorporates a Curtis-Wright TC-ASIST (Twin Claw-Aircraft Ship Integrated Secure and Traverse) recovery system to assist safe handling and recovery. The flight deck extension retrofitted to the two prototype ships and fitted from build in the remainder of the class will further assist safe helicopter operation, particularly improving margins with respect to AW-101 transport type’s rear ramp.
