Regina wasn’t sure how long she’d sat at the kitchen table staring at the clock on the wall. She felt like doing an Angela Bassett and going over to Parker’s place and setting the joint on fire. But of course she had to be rational, clearheaded Regina.

There was always the possibility that Kelly was just a deranged woman who had some unreasonable gripe against her and was making the whole thing up. And that notion was just as silly as her idea to set Parker’s loft on fire. Unless Kelly moonlighted as a doctor, there was no way for her to know about his birthmark.

How could he have done this to her, to them? He swore he loved her and wanted to make a life with her and the kids. And all the while he was having a relationship with someone else. A baby. That devastated her more than anything. A fling, a short-term affair, they might have been able to weather through, but a baby ...

“Ma, telephone.”

In a daze, Regina turned to her son. “Who is it, Darren?”

“It’s Dad.”

She really didn’t feel like talking to Russell, not tonight. “Tell him I’ll call him tomorrow.”

Darren looked at her. “Are you okay, Ma?”

Regina forced herself to smile. “Yes, I’m fine. Just a little tired, that’s all. Tell your dad what I said, okay?”

Darren nodded and walked out of the kitchen.

Regina pushed herself up from her seat and somehow found her way to her bedroom. All she wanted to do was crawl under her covers and sleep until it all felt better.
