DAD’S BIRTHDAY

Celebrating my dad’s birthday was never about gifts, balloons, and cards. With every passing year, his only birthday wish was for his children and grandchildren to come together for a family meal. He relished and took pride in his growing family. He would laugh, grinning from ear to ear, whenever someone announced they were expecting a baby, because he loved being a grandpa. The grandkids kept him young in spirit and reminded him that whatever struggles he endured in his life, love does, in fact, conquer all.

Dad lived simply and humbly, and whatever he lacked in material possessions was made up for by the rich blessings of six children and thirteen grandchildren—with two more on the way when he passed. His death was sudden and happened two days after Christmas, while I was writing this book. This chapter is bittersweet for me. What I intended to be a celebration of his favorite foods and a way to honor him is now a dedication to all the birthdays we did celebrate, year after year.

Breaking bread, having fellowship with one another, and giving thanks for the gift of life is what birthdays are about in our family. We’re still celebrating Dad on his birthday with his favorite foods as we remember him in photos and stories.

This is dedicated to my dad, who sacrificed so much for us kids so that his ceiling would be our floor. We love and miss you much. I can only imagine the bountiful birthday celebration you must be enjoying each year in heaven.
