I blinked and opened my eyes. Looked around the brightly lit space. There was something covering my face. An oxygen mask. All around me there was the sound of beeping and the low murmur of voices. I was in the hospital.

Everything hurt. Every bone and muscle throbbed as a painful reminder that while I had been battling Jane in my mind, my body had been undergoing some rough treatment of its own.

“North,” I gasped out.

He appeared by my side, looking as pale as the sheets on my bed. “I am here.”

“Where’s Liam?”

The sylph shook his head. “I don’t know. But we have a bigger issue.”

Before I could ask him what, the curtain was thrust aside and a good-looking guy wearing a white lab coat stepped into the space. “Good, you’re awake, Ms….?”

“Slade. Emma Slade.”

“What’s the last thing you remember?”

I figured being possessed by a sylph wasn’t the answer he wanted to hear so I just shook my head and offered a rueful smile. “I was in the basement with a few of my friends, near the washing machines. It had been a while since I ate. Maybe my blood sugar dropped?”

“Ah,” he nodded as though that made sense. “Are you hypoglycemic?”

I made a noncommittal sound. Best I could do without lying. “It’s been a little crazy lately. I promise I will try to take better care.”

“Well, you were found passed out on a sidewalk. I’ll have a nurse get you some juice and maybe something to eat. Do you have someone to take you home?”

“If my cell is nearby, I can make a few calls.” I dodged answering directly.

He picked up a bag off the side table that contained my cell phone and then studied me a beat longer. “You look familiar.”

“Oh, I work at Java Have Mercy. You ever been there? Best coffee in Manhattan.”

He shook his head and then smiled. “No, but I live on caffeine. I’ll have to give it a try sometime.”

“Sounds good.” Damn it, would Doogie just am-scray already? I had werewolves to find and a sylph to exorcise.

“Take better care of yourself, Ms. Slade. Someone will be by to discharge you soon.” He said and then departed, closing the privacy curtains behind him.

I extracted the phone from the baggie. Damn it, Liam was going to have to pick up the tab for this little hospital visit, since my insurance hadn’t kicked in yet. I hated asking him for more than he’d already given me.

“All clear, North,” I said as I tried to call Liam. It went immediately to voicemail.

I tried Gray next, and then Spencer.

Nothing.

“North?”

The bedpan on the table beside me rattled. “Here, kotik.”

I frowned the pink plastic tray. “You’ve looked better.”

“I’m having trouble manifesting at the moment,” he said.

“I hear that happens to men your age.”

No reply but I could sense the bedpan glowering at me. “Jump into my phone. We need to find out why no one is picking up.”

There was a moment’s hesitation and then my cell rattled in my hand. “Go out to the lounge area.
