CHAPTER TEN

GRACE

I wake to the sun shining through the big bay window. I don’t know what time I went to sleep last night, but I know it was late…or early, depending on how you look at it. Honestly, I’m surprised I slept at all. Even thinking about last night sends a fresh wave of hot tears rushing to my eyes. Unlike the tears last night, I don’t let them fall. After everything, I never expected Kyden to do that to me. I know I have no claim to him, and he’s free to do whatever he wants to do. But to hook up with some random woman and then come home and kiss me like that? I feel disgusted, shattered and heartbroken.

The worst part of it all was for that second, that little moment in time I thought ‘This is it. This kiss is the end to all the heartbreak and animosity and the beginning to my happily ever after’. I thought I was finally going to get the man I love. Then I smelled the cheap perfume, and all of those hopes were slayed. I made a vow last night before falling asleep. Never again. Never again will I trust a man. I’ve been hurt so many times. I find it funny though. Out of all the abuse I suffered at the hands of Tim, even the physical, the pain Kyden inflicted on me last night was the worst.

All of these thoughts only serve to make me angry. I just want to get the hell out of this cabin. I want Tim behind bars and I want to be able to move on with my life. It’s frustrating to think that I thought I was ready. I thought that when Tim finally did come for me that I would be able to fight him off. How incredibly wrong I was. My thoughts come to an abrupt stop when I hear the door to the room Clark and Sawyer share creak open. I look across the living room to see Sawyer walking out, still in his basketball shorts and t-shirt he slept in. His hair is disheveled and his eyes sleepy, it’s clear he just woke up. When he spots me on the couch he gives me a questioning look, but when he gets a look at my puffy eyes and the dried tear tracks down my checks his eyes turn sympathetic.

“I take it things didn’t go well after Romeo got home last night,” he asks as he motions to me on the couch.

“Yeah. You could say that.” I roll my eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he says genuinely before plopping down on my legs. For the first time since Kyden left last night I crack a smile. Sawyer is so easy to be around. I wish I could be attracted to him. He’s good-looking, funny and nice, but as hard as I want it, I don’t see him as anything but a friend.

“Why do guys have to be such assholes?” I ask through narrowed eyes.
