KANE

“You’ve got to stop summoning me like this,” Layla said when she stepped into my office.

I took in the sight of her. “You came.”

She was always incredible to look at. She wore jeans so tight they looked painted on and a loose top that didn’t hide her curves—the loose clothing only seemed to accentuate them. Layla had always been classy as fuck.

“Against my better judgement,” she snapped. She was in a mood. It made her that much more attractive. I loved it when she got all riled up.

“What do you need help with?” she asked, glancing at my desk where the laptop was open on spreadsheets again.

“I don’t need help with something specific.”

“Did you take care of your campaign?”

I shook my head. The business wasn’t doing well, and I wasn’t happy. I still hadn’t found that son-of-a-bitch alpha who was ruining my life without the common decency of showing his face.

Anger burned hot in my chest, but I pushed it away. I wasn’t going to focus on that right now.

“I want to offer you a job.”

Layla frowned. “What?”

“Delaney mentioned you were looking for a job, and I want to offer you one.”

She shook her head. “I have a job.”

“What job?”

“I have my company I want to get going again. I don’t need a job, Kane.”

“Come on, I’ll make it worth your while. I could really use your expertise right now, and you need something to get on your feet.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

I clenched my jaw. “Why not?”

“Because we shouldn’t be working together.”

“Why the fuck not?” I demanded. “Why are you so against being involved with me?”

Layla looked irritated. “I’m not against it.”

“You’re not for it,” I said. “You’re fighting something that works. The other night—”

“I’m not going to talk about the other night.”

“Why not? We’re both single, and you can’t deny that we’re drawn to each other. We’re supposed to be together; you know we are. I don’t understand what’s going on with you.”

“You don’t know me, Kane.”

I was getting irritated, too.

Of all the wolves in my pack, Layla was the one wolf I knew the best. Not only because of how close we’d been, but because she was my wolf. She was the other half of my picture, the missing puzzle piece. She was my fucking fated mate.

“Things change,” she said. “I’ve been gone a while.”

I shook my head. I was ready to fight with her, to get this bullshit out of the way. Why couldn’t she just accept what we were?

“You offered me a job,” Layla said before I could say anything. “I’m flattered, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to turn it down.”

I clenched my jaw.

“Is that all?” she asked. Her expression was carefully neutral, her hands folded in front of her.

“Yeah,” I bit out.

She nodded. “Okay.”

She turned around, giving me her back, and left the office. When she was gone, I let out an exasperated breath. What the fuck was she playing at? We were great together. We were meant to be together, and I’d called off the shit with Lourdes for her.
