The Sin Pattern in My Words
My weaknesses are clear to me. Being past the wise age of seventy, I know my tendency to be impulsive, to think that my way is the best way (God calls this pride). I am beginning to see that just as we each have patterns of sinful behavior, we also have a pattern of sin in our words. For some the pattern is sarcasm, for others criticism, for still others negativism. For me it is speaking when I shouldnât. I know the verses: âThose who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything,â and âA truly wise person uses few wordsâ (Proverbs 13:3; 17:27, NLT). But still my mouth opens up and words spill out.
On August 7, 2000, I wrote the following in my journal:
I was on my knees before my Fatherâworshiping with the song, âHoly Is the Lord,â and I was singing with the music, âHe is high and exalted in majesty.â[5] I began to pray, Oh, my God, let my unspoken words exalt you.
My request surprised me. Often I pray that my spoken words will exalt my God, but this was a first to ask that words I chose not to speak would glorify Him. But as I meditated on this, I knew that just as choosing wise words brings Him glory, remaining silent when the words are boiling over to be spoken can also glorify.
When I put a watch over the door of my lips and donât give advice to my husband or adult children (advice that I see as right and just the needed thing), I am worshiping my Father.
When I weigh my words on the scale of wisdom and remain silent, God is well-pleased. It is far easier to talk than to walk my worship. When the words are bursting to come forth and I wait for Godâs timing, my words bow in worship before my God.
