Chapter 22

I returned to work to Marcy's surprise. “I need to work today, keep my mind off of things,” I told her. She assumed I was talking about my zombie encounter and didn't question it, so I worked until she was ready to leave. “I am going to stay on and do some extra filing,” I explained. No one else questioned my staying after. I was new, and no one, but Marcy, had been given instructions for me.

Bleeders were getting off work soon, and everyone slacked off beforehand on the screening side of the hospital. It’d be no different here, I was sure. I’d be cutting it close, but I had about an hour before the night crew woke up. I laid low until the end of second shift, filing papers, checking patients, running errands and pretending to organize the already organized Marcy's office. What I was actually doing was studying the fire escape route and collecting supplies, planning to get Zack out of the hospital and back to Bobby Bishop's shop before dark.

Knowing I needed a crash course, I helped a bleeder named Jamie prepare the humans for release. He never said a word about them not going home, and I hoped the bleeders here didn't truly know. I’d overheard earlier we gave everyone being released a heavy sedative, one I knew nothing about, to prepare for their final screening by the vampire night crew.

The human's not being able to feel a thing relieved me a little from the regret I felt. I couldn't save everyone. I was supposed to give Zack his dose, but instead I gave him a sedative I knew only worked temporarily. Now if I couldn't break him out, I’d just doomed him to a worse fate.

The night crew would emerge from the basements once it was full dark. Bleeders didn't go in the basement. The night crew basically lived down there, and now I suspected they were guarding it. The tests ran and equipment down there were said to make us sick. We would heal, but bleeders hated being sick worse than humans because we’ve never gotten used it. The night crew would collect the patients from their rooms and take them to the basement for screening.

It was simple, really. I planned to take Zack from his room before the night crew retrieved him, before it even turned night. I would then zip him up in a decon bag and take him through the parts of the hospital I knew were deserted just before dark. If I ran into any bleeders, I hoped the decon bag, along the news of Irene's death and my ordeal with the zombie infection would keep anyone from stopping me.

Also, I was relying on the fact that Dana had said earlier my hand scan gave me access to all parts of the hospital. I hoped she hadn’t gotten around to fixing the mistake. I would use the access points I knew I passed through before coming to see Tombs on the weekends just to be safe.
