Chapter 3

Book 2 The next morning, the falling snow had turned to sheets of slushy rain. It was bitterly cold, but Syar was undeterred and he bravely ventured forth to help Taneru figure out how they were to get more information from the Rysios. Taneru stayed and helped the innkeeper patch a hole in old inn’s roof since it would be useless to run the forge in such weather.

A short while later, he covered his wagon well, hitched up Nico and took it to the marketplace anyway just so the freezing shopkeepers could come to stand around it. He knew their lives depended on what they could sell at their shops and it was important for them to work every day to sustain themselves. When he fired up the coals, they came in droves and warmed their hands gratefully beside the glowing embers.

Syar finally found him there, and when Taneru saw him lingering just beyond one of the buildings, he knew it was time to go. He closed down the oven and set his wagon for the inn. Syar arrived just moments after he did and came stomping and sputtering into the room, soaking wet and chilled to the bone. “I found a way in.” He announced.

He flapped his arms about himself, while Taneru was encouraging the fire to life.

“In where?” Taneru questioned.

Syar gave him a sardonic look.

“I found a way for you to get into Malvane Hall as a servant. You should be able to get what information you need about Sir Aarao if you are right among them.” Taneru paused in surprise to look at the boy as he shivered and hopped from foot to foot. “You found a way into Malvane Hall?” He reached for a blanket and threw it to him. Syar wrapped it around himself and his teeth chattered with cold.

“Yes, I went all the way downriver to see what was available. I found out that Duke Saphir Che Rysio needs a new groom for his personal stables, so I scheduled an interview for you. Anyone applying for the position can come to Malvane Hall tomorrow, so we will have to get an early start to get you into disguise.” Taneru raised his eyebrows in surprise and put several large pieces of wood on the fire. “Are you sure I’ll be able to get information as a groom? I would be spending all my time in the stables.” Syar only shrugged. “I know it’s not exactly ideal, but it was the only position available.”

“Then, I guess I will have to make it work. Good job, Syar. Thank you.”

Taneru pointed to the bed and his voice grew authoritative.

“Now, you get out of those wet clothes and get into that bed. If you don’t, you’ll be too sick to help me tomorrow. I’ll sleep in the chair tonight.” Syar scowled.

“You sound just like my grandmother.”

Taneru couldn’t help the large grin that spread across his face.

“I know. I learned it from my mother. But it’s sound advice, now do it.
