CHAPTER TWELVE

It had been a little more than a week since Aurora had made her new home at the hotel where all the others were staying. She had jumped right in and taken an assignment to help guard the area. After all, she was a vampire and had already been living and fighting on her own for the past year.

Everyone seemed to accept her, and Xavier, who was Wolfe’s right-hand vampire, had brought her into the fold with the others. Of course, the males were both a little infatuated and amazed to have a fellow vampire who was a female among them. Xavier tested her blade skills and commended her on her pinpoint accuracy. He also taught her all the skills required to handle a firearm, except for shooting it. With the limited ammo they had, he could only afford to allow her two bullets for practice. Of course, she had been an excellent student and passed with flying colors.

“Aurora, you excel at everything you do. Lilith did a good job of teaching you to become a vampire,” he said as they stood on the roof of the hotel and looked out over the mostly abandoned city.

“Thanks. She really is a good friend.” She had grown to like Xavier and even Lilith had made a comment about the man’s moral character. So she trusted him.

“Do any of you have special skills?”

“What do you mean by special? I mean, of course, we have excellent hearing, eyesight and smell. We can outrun any human and have superior strength.”

She bit her lip. “I mean something beyond that.”

“What talent do you have, Aurora?”

She faced him to find his intense stare studying her. “Apparently, I can freeze time.”

His brows jacked up. “Come again.”

“When I met up with Adam and his group, I froze the four men in time while I drank from Adam.”

This time his eyes widened so much she thought they might pop from his head. “Holy fuck. Can you do that on anyone? Is there any effect on them afterwords? What about a vampire, or better yet, a demon?”

She shrugged. “I’ve never tried it on a vampire, as you guys are the only ones I’ve ever met. It works on low-level demons and, as far as I can tell, they simply step back into their reality like nothing ever happened. I’ve never held anyone long enough for them to really miss any time.” She turned completely and leaned against the wall. “Lilith seems to think it will grow stronger as time goes by.”

“That’s a real handy weapon you wield. I’d like to see it in action.”

“Sure. I suppose. Ashley told me I have special abilities that have yet to reach their potential and that I was destined to help Luna get to Kentucky.”

“Speaking of Kentucky, I heard from my brother they finally made it to Vegas. He said they ran into some blocked roads but nothing they couldn’t handle. Of course, the city is full of demons like any other, but they’ve not had any trouble.
