Chapter 6

As it turned out, managing an ice cream parlor was very different from running a bookstore. Plus, I was determined to keep Travis’s mind off his grandfather. I’m not too proud to admit I cast a calming spell on the inside of the shop. It wafted through the parlor like a soothing presence, dissolving our tension and worry right along with anyone else’s who walked through the door. It also stopped Travis’s tears.

“The doctors will take care of him. Blow,” I said, holding a napkin to Travis’s nose.

He blew. “Promise?”

Henry had been ghostly pale when the paramedics wheeled him outside, but his lips weren’t blue, and his breath fogged the oxygen mask.

“The doctors will do everything they can to help him. Shall we wait on the customers?”

A couple had entered, unaware of the earlier emergency.

I tilted Travis’s face up. “I can’t run this place without you.”

Travis nodded. I sighed, grateful magic had diffused the situation.

There was more to working behind the counter at Sugar Cones than scooping frozen milk on edible cones. Most of the flavors came with a dash of something extra sprinkled or drizzled on top. Salted caramel bliss came with chocolate jimmies, freshly toasted coconut showered toasted coconut crunch, and a dollop of whipped cream topped strawberry fields. Thank goodness I had Travis’s help. He had memorized most of the combinations, and for the ones he didn’t remember, he knew where his father kept the list. Jinx even managed to distract the more impatient customers by cozying up to them. The last customer of the midday rush was a familiar face.

“We meet again,” I said to the woman who had sold me my shell necklace.

“I didn’t know you worked here.”

“I’m helping out a friend.”

“Don’t you mean your husband?” She smiled slyly.

Was there anyone left in Siren’s Cove who didn’t know Roman and I had tied the knot?

She went on. “I knew the two of you would get together. You’re soul mates.” She leaned in. “The air hummed with your love the other night.”

If she had talked about another couple, I would have probably found the situation romantic. But this was me, and I’d married the man I had sworn I was over. She didn’t know this, and it wasn’t her fault we tied the knot.

I wasn’t sure how to reply to her comments, so I asked instead, “What can I get you?”

“An orange cream milkshake, please.” She dug through her wallet as she spoke. “My parents got married on a boat too. I mean ship. Dad hates when I call it a boat.” She made finger quotes at the last word. “He says the sea was always his life, but he would have given it up for Mom.”

“Is your dad a fisherman?”

“He’s more of a sailor. Mom loves the water too.”

Jinx, who’d been staring at her, barked.

“What is it, Jinx?” I asked.

The woman bent down and scratched behind Jinx’s ears with both hands. “You’re a cutie.” She said something else to my dog, but my head was in the freezer, and I couldn’t hear.
