“Do you mind waiting?” Jerry asked Todd once we came to a stop across from Maria’s office. “We only need to make an appointment for later.”

“Sure, boss,” Todd said, pulling out a cigarette.

Jerry frowned as we crossed the street together. “Her door’s open.”

“So? It’s a beautiful warm day.”

“She never leaves her door open.” Jerry took off ahead of me, hurtling through the open doorway. When I reached the office he was standing in the middle of a room that looked as though a hurricane had blown through it, with furniture overturned and papers and files pulled out of drawers and strewn everywhere.

“I wish I could call the police, but that wouldn’t do any good. I’m sure they’re in on this too.” Jerry’s eyes met mine. “It’s my bet they took every piece of evidence Maria collected.” He shook his head looking around. “And Maria’s gone too.”

My hand went to my mouth. “Do you think…?”

“With these goons on the loose anything could have happened to her.”

Jerry searched the room for a few minutes and then the two of us ran across the street to where Todd was leaning against the car smoking. “She’s gone, Todd. And I’m certain they’ve taken the evidence she collected.”

Todd stared at Jerry blankly and then threw his cigarette down and ground it into the dirt with his heel. “Those bastards. They won’t get away with it. I’ll call the firm and get some people on it right away.” He opened the car door and grabbed his phone and then punched in numbers, his expression deadly serious.

Jerry paced and swore under his breath. “I’ve got to let Berkant know,” he said, pulling out his phone.

I climbed into the backseat, my mind whirling. Maria was our best hope with her connections to the CIA and the justice department, not to mention her lawyer boyfriend. Without her we were SOL.

Todd slid into the driver’s seat. “She was so concerned with keeping you two safe and now…” He looked over his shoulder and shook his head. “Why didn’t she hire security for herself?”

I stared at Todd’s distraught face. Had she been kidnapped or had something more dire happened?

Jerry opened the other door and slid in beside me. “Berkant will make some calls. He thinks it’s time to bring in the cavalry.”

“FBI, CIA, what?”

“I would say the CIA since this is an international case.”

“Why did he wait until now?”

“Since he’s not a U.S. citizen he was trying to tread carefully, but with Maria’s disappearance he’s as concerned as we are—and he’s our last hope. They wouldn’t dare do anything to him.”

“I hope you’re right.”

We reached the motel and both of us hopped out. Jerry took the stairs two at a time, had the door open by the time I reached it. He had his phone in his hand, a look of determination on his face. “Todd is driving you back to Ames, Summer. I’ve already arranged it. With Maria being kidnapped I just can’t chance something happening to you.” He took my face in his hands, his eyes filling.
