Mick pulled into the driveway at the lake, grateful to arrive without a DUI. The boat wasnât in the lift, so his mom hadnât gotten home yet.
As he walked into the tree house, Linnie made a face. âGood God, Mick. Itâs four in the afternoon. What have you been drinking?â She sat at the table, stitching a border onto a toddler-sized dance costume.
âMr. Jack Danielâs would be the culprit there. The rest of the story involved two girls in bikinis, a rainstorm, and the Pascalsâ dadâs stash of Makerâs Mark in the boathouse,â he said.
âAh, the Pascal place. I dipped into that hooch myself back in the day,â she said. âI donât know. Wild bunch back when I knew them.â
âThe tradition continues,â he said.
âDamn!â She nicked her finger with the needle and jerked her hand back in pain. âIâll miss the kids, but I wonât miss these damn recital costumes. I donât know how I get stuck doing half this stuff. These children all have parents, for Godâs sake.â
âMom come back?â he asked, sitting in a chair beside her.
âNot yet.â She tied off a thread and bit it. âI tried to call her, but sheâs not picking up.â
âYeah, me too,â he said. âHave you listened to the machine?â
âNope,â she said. âI hate those things. I liked it when people couldnât find you every waking second.â
âThere are messages, Iâm sure. A deputy was looking for her and found me instead with Momâs license plate number,â he said.
âYouâre lucky he didnât make you walk a straight line,â she said. âWhat did they want with Elaine?â
âSomethingâs happened out at Gretaâs. To Mattie, I think. I donât know much more than that.â
Linnie put down her sewing. âOh God, I hope sheâs okay. She seems like an awfully good soul.â
Mick liked Mattie, too, but he knew there was another reason to be concerned. Greta relied on Mattie. Without her, Mickâs grandmother had only Mattieâs progeny and the remains of her own fractured family.
âGreta could manage, right?â He didnât even like the woman, but the thought of her in some retirement community felt wrongâlike caging a bird of prey.
âI donât know,â she said. âIf she lived in town, maybe, but out there in the country . . .â Linnieâs face registered significant doubt.
Technically, he was Gretaâs only blood relativeâregardless of what she believed.
âDo you know the whole story about my mom and Greta?â he asked.
âI thought your mom explained that to you.â
âNot really,â he said. âThere has to be more to it.â
âThis is not my conversation to have with you, hon,â she said. Linnie wasnât going to cough up more than he knew already. âBut I will say this. Your folks had an amazing marriage.â
âI know,â he said. âI had a front-row seat.â
