Chapter Six

Darryl looked out the window of the log cabin where he’d been since he left Canada. Raven should have arrived that morning. With every passing hour, his concern grew for her safety, as well as his and Jordan’s. He walked to the kitchen and poured his fourth cup of coffee. Just as he raised the cup, he heard a car come up the driveway. He walked toward the window and peeped out. He sighed in relief as Raven stepped out of the car. She smiled knowingly toward the door just as it opened.

“Well hello, stranger,” she said as she walked toward him.

“Hello, beautiful!” he responded, as he pulled her into his arms. “I expected you a few hours earlier,” he said, taking one more glance around before shutting and locking the door.

“I wanted to be sure I wasn’t followed. But I heard from my contacts that your threat has been neutralized,” she said, as she slipped out of her sweater and lay her laptop bag down.

“How can that be? My grandfather was killed in a hit and run and Jordan’s house was targeted last night. If it wasn’t for Eric, I’m not sure that she would be alive.”

She lay back on the sofa as she tunneled her fingers through her hair pulling the heavy tresses back from her face. “D, all that means is that the threat is not necessarily from this end. So what’s the plan?” she asked, laying back and closing her eyes.

He didn’t mistake her position for nonchalance. He knew this was how she would visualize the logistics as he described them; it was one of her skills he admired most.

“Jesse is on her farm starting repairs and restoration. He is also there to see if the interest is about her land. It seems coincidental that my grandfather’s worries began around the time that he purchased the property. That’s what bothers me the most, the fact that we don’t know where the threat is coming from.”

“You think someone has linked Jordan to you?”
