Chapter 19
Situated in the kitchen—Mack on one side being tended by his daughter, Suede on the other, Leather had left to chase down Ilora who had escaped him—Rum tsked as he dabbed the blood from the corner of Suede’s mouth with a cloth soaked in a wash of purple and blue healing salts. He looked into his husband’s one good eye, since the other was covered with a cloth soaked in a chilled wash of purple, green and red healing salts.
“Are you proud of yourself?”
Suede tried to smile, but winced from the pain of the split reopening. “’Twas a fine bit of wrestling.” “Wrestling?! Mack seemed most intent on causing you injury.” Rum dabbed a little harder than necessary, annoyed at having all his work ruined. “There was nae wrestling involved.”
“Ah now, love. Offer me nae lecture. Recall I do the afternoon before our marriage with ye wrestling Gin. Were ye not intent on injuring him?”
“Nae. Only did I wish to overpower him, since to punch him would have resulted in my own injury, not his.”
“Do ye think ye could thrash him if the curse was removed?” “Aye.” Rum took the cloth from Suede’s eye to check on the swelling. Seeing it had yet to go down, he re-plunged the cloth into the chilled solution and, after wringing it out, placed it once more over Suede’s black eye.
“Of course he can thrash him, ye fool!” Mack interrupted. “Taught him I did how to fight.”
Suede ignored Mack. “Are ye certain ye can do so? I wish not for ye to be injured.” Rum’s face hardened, his eyes turning chill. “There is nae other option. I cannot and will not lose to him; always have I known this. If ever the van Wyrn removes the curse, ‘twill be the way of it. Or do I assume by your words you think to interfere?”
“Ye interfered while I tussled with Mack.” “Because you took it not seriously while he did. Besides, ‘tis a whole other situation. Nae need was there to prove yourself to Mack for he knew you could handle yourself in a fight with him. Gin thinks me incapable of…” His words were cut off when Suede knocked his hand with the cloth away and kissed him.
“Enough tending, I would have ye now.” Suede tossed the cloth from over his eye into the bowl with the solution, or meant to, but with his eye partially swollen shut, he missed. He did not care. “Let us adjourn to the bedroom.”
Rum glowered at him as he summoned the discarded cloth from the floor to his hand and placed it in the bowl, wringing it out before slapping it back over Suede’s eye. “Nae. Now sit.”
“Fuck! Told ye I have what yer brogue does to me. The thicker ‘tis the more it…”
“Aye, I recall well your words, but it can wait.” Suede crossed his arms over his chest, refusing to hold the cloth over his eye, his pirate up. “Ye challenge me to change yer mind.
