LOCALISED WINDS

Mountains are windier places. Hills force air to rise, either when winds have to go over them or as they become heated by the sun. As the air descends on the other (lee) side, it becomes compressed, dries and warms, sometimes enough to create a strong, gusty, dry wind. The term Föhn is often used as a generic term for a warm downslope wind, although it does have other local names around the world such as ‘Chinook’ (meaning snow eater) in Colorado, US.

Not all downslope winds are warm. Even when air warms as it descends it can still be cooler than the air it is displacing, which results in a biting cold wind. Katabatic winds occur when cold, dense air drains down a mountainside into the valley below (e.g. the ‘Mistral’ in France).
