A few days later, Madison ventured back to Crow’s cell.

The feathered creature paced her small area with hands clamped over her ears as if she attempted to block out the agonies of Hell. Once not too long ago it’d bothered Madison too. Now it served as white noise she rarely noticed. Cawel’s black plumage quivered with each stride of her agitation, and she muttered beneath her breath, like a crazy woman.

Madison studied the oracle angel for several minutes as the other woman prayed to her relations detailing her defeat, giving her location, and requesting an immediate evacuation. None of the litanies exited the room, instead they crashed against the magical chamber and evaporated into mist. Not being of this realm, Madison wasn’t surprised Cawel was unaware of the magical shield.

After several minutes, the angelic female realized Madison watched her. Cawel came to an abrupt halt and crossed her arms over her chest in a defensive stance. “My siblings will free me from this hellhole.”

Preferring to let the other woman believe what she wanted, Madison shrugged. There’d be no rescue because none of her siblings could venture into Hell without permission being granted. Even then, they’d never locate her because she was locked up tight with her magic hidden.

“You’re an ignorant bitch who—”

Madison wiggled a finger, and Cawel crashed to her knees with a scream. The skin-stitched floor concaved like silly putty, before snapping back into place. It screeched right along with the damned oracle.

“Your momma really should’ve taught you some manners, Cawel.” As the crow’s feathers burst into flames and her skin melted from her bones, Madison sauntered into the room, drawing closer to her nemesis. “As your host I deserve more respect than middle school name-calling.”

On her hands and knees, the black-feathered angel panted as the flames died out. “You’re a fool.”

The hellish magic crushed every bone in Cawel’s body. “The magic is set. Each slur gifts you with torture. You are the fool if you continue along this road.”

The crow supined on her back, glaring at Madison, but her fortitude remained intact. “You’re wrong if you think I’ll break.”

Madison knelt beside her new acquisition. “That’s not my goal. To break you means your suffering ends.”

Cawel looked away. It satisfied the Queen of Hell to see the glimmer of a tear at the corner of the crow’s eye.

“Did you even want to know why your brethren want me dead?”

“I follow orders, not ask questions.” The parched creature glared at her. “Before your birth, I prophesized your rise in Hell. Micah cloaked you well. My first bead on you was the night I visited you.”

“Did you see that my rise would damn you?”

Cawel shook her head. “I gave you the false prophecy to thwart my original vision.”

“My son’s a prophet too. Did you know that?”

Again Cawel shook her head.

“His accuracy is almost one-hundred percent. Even with your false divination, he never predicted I’d escape my fate.” They’d only dodged it for a handful of years, and Madison’s ultimate suspicion had been that she’d die before she became the Queen of Hell.
