All day Sunday and into Monday, Sharon Novotny sat in the bentwood rocker, staring out the bay window into the orchard. Her arms felt glued to the curving wood beneath them, and Sharon herself felt glued to the rocker. Tears clotted inside, wrapped around her windpipe in an icy coil.

She rocked mechanically. Her body was taking on the shape of the chair. There was the obituary to write for the newspaper. It felt complicated and impossible.

A shifting cast of friends and band members moved around the room, talking softly. Someone offered to go to the Santa Rosa airport bus to pick up her older son, her only child now. Someone else brought her a bowl of pasta and goat-cheese salad. “You have to eat,” a voice said. “Come on, try a little of this postmodern casserole.”
