I have no idea how long I’m out for when I finally come to. The sharp pang of smelling salts jolts me upward, much too fast because I can feel the blood in my brain trying to catch up with my sudden change in position. It takes me a few seconds to recall where I am.

“Easy now, you’re okay.” A stranger in a set of blue scrubs is pressing a small paper cup of water into my hands. “Just passed out from low blood pressure. When was the last time you ate?”

“Uh...” Confusion clouds my memories as I try to recall what day it even is today. “... lunchtime, I think.”

“And what did you have?”

“Coffee. Half a bagel...?” That’s an easy one since it’s what I have every day when I’m at work.

“Okay. Since you’re lucid and not in any health scare, I’m going to recommend you head down to the cafeteria and get yourself something to eat.”

“No, no, I’m fine. I just want to...”

The stranger places their hand on my shoulder, their expression becoming stern.

“You’re not a patient of mine, but either you’re going to be admitted in an emergency and be hooked up to a saline IV, or you can walk out of here and get a meal. Your choice. Either way, the babies will still be here when you’re feeling better.”

I purse my mouth to one side. They have a point; I can do this the hard way or the easy way, either option resulting in my visit being cut short temporarily. And as much as I hate hospital food, I can choke it down. Better than having an IV in my arm.

“Here, I’ll take her.”

Two arms curl beneath mine and haul me up to my feet. Every unknown face in the room is staring at me with concern knitted into their features. Peak embarrassment. I wish I could die right here and right now.

I’m halfway to the door (the crowd is nice enough to part and let me through) when I discover that it’s Denton, once again, “gracing” me with his presence. I wait until we’re outside and no one else is watching before I wrench myself from his grip.

“Let go of me.” I straighten out my clothes and back away. He stands there staring at me with an incredulous look on his face.

“What the heck did I do to piss you off now?” He shoves his hands into his pockets and shoots a glance over his shoulder to see if anyone is listening in on our conversation.

“It’s been a week. Why haven’t you called me back?”

“Excuse me? Why was it my responsibility to call you? I brought you breakfast as an apology, and you threw me out of your apartment after I asked you about a simple photo.”

“You had no right to touch it, Denton.”

“I wanted to get to know more about you! What is so wrong about that!?” He throws his hands up in the air, his voice echoing down the hallway. Now people are paying attention and wondering what all the hubbub is about.
