Scene Four

The following evening, 6 p.m. Lights up on an empty stage. BENTLEY enters through the passageway, wearing jeans and a T-shirt. He picks up his suitcase and puts it by the front door. He switches on the tape recorder, picks up the microphone, and speaks into it.

BENTLEY

Dear Sandy. This is your husband Bentley speaking. In view of recent events, and taking all the various factors appertaining to the situation into consideration, I wish to inform you that I am leaving you for a period of trial separation. Being married to you, while enjoyable in many aspects, has placed severe limitations on my freedom of movement, as I have what may be termed a roving eye, and wish to indulge my inclinations in that field of endeavour. I have decided to seek greater freedom and greener pastures and will embark on a new way of life. As I set out to seek my fortune, I leave you with a thought for today which I hope will console you: It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, so don’t feel too badly about it. The same thing happened to Chuck and Betty when their marriage went on the rocks. So there it is. I’ll say goodbye now, and embark on my new way of life, freed from all shackles, and eager to embrace new experiences. I don’t wanna break your heart, woman, but hell, I gotta keep a-travellin’ on. So it’s time to say goodbye, I guess. This is your husband Bentley signing off. Goodnight and God bless.

(He switches off the machine, looking very pleased with himself. Then he switches to playback. SANDY’s voice is heard on the tape.)
