The concert was manic, intense — all the earlier emotion rocketing out into the music — the audience sensed the mood, fed on it, and fed it. The atmosphere grew electric, one of those unforgettable concerts where magic happens between the band and the audience. Maybe because of the earlier moment of deep feeling, the interaction between Angel and Blade seemed particularly powerful and connected, almost as if they could read each other’s mind.

Crys watched from her usual hidden spot, while the crew around her worked and the band rocked out. And when they played “Love Bound,” and Blade sang, “For every night when the bedsheets burned / For every night when thunder rolled,” he looked directly at her, and this time there was no confusion about what that look meant. He was promising her burning bedsheets and all the thunder she could handle. It was wicked, and intense, and she nearly fell off her shoes at the heat between them — even with half the stage separating them and an arena full of people watching.

After the final encore, when Blade came off the stage he took Crys’s hand and pulled her with him, and though Scott was there with his camera to record the moment, it was not done for the pictures.

When they reached the band lounge, Marigold in her black leather power suit was waiting for them with a list of the evening’s backstage guests. “Crys, will you come and assist Jed in the guest lounge like you did in Portland?” she asked briskly, so certain that the response would be ‘yes’ that she didn’t pause for an answer. “Great — we only have two groups of four coming through tonight; an easy night, but Jed still appreciates the help. Come on, I’ll walk you down there now,” she added.

Crys moved to follow Marigold, but Blade tightened his grip on her hand, holding her there beside him. “Crys is staying here,” he said, in a flat tone that warned Marigold not to dispute the point.

“Right,” she said, pursing her lips — she was accustomed to being in charge and didn’t like being contradicted. “I’m sure you have your reasons; Jed will just have to do everything himself.”

“I don’t mind—” Crys began, but Blade shook his head.

“I want you with me, sweetheart,” he said, stroking the hidden palm of her hand with his thumb, sending electric ripples of sensation through her. She tried to keep her breathing steady, as Blade turned to Marigold, saying, “Look, Goldie, Crys got me through a… a very rough moment this afternoon. I need her to stay near me right now, okay?”

“Oh… I see… of course!” Marigold’s pout vanished and was replaced by saccharine concern. “It’s no problem; Jed will understand completely. I’m so glad Crys is able to give you the support you need.”

Crys bit her lip. So we’re going to hide this thing between us, she thought, and still pretend it’s just a professional arrangement. Would that make her a whore, she wondered, a true professional girlfriend? She already had the diamond earrings.
