EIGHTEEN

Matt

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Robbie since that almost-kiss at the café. Every time I close my eyes I can still smell her, taste her, feel her soft skin and her silky hair on my fingers.

Being this distracted is not helpful today of all days, as I make my second visit to LON. I’m taking another tour of the building with Lincoln and one of his aides, who is carrying a tablet and reeling off facts and figures. The whole time we’re walking around, I keep absent-mindedly looking through the windows of the offices where people are busy at work—and then quickly looking away, in case Anna or Brenda are here today and spot me.

I know it’s cowardly, and I am appropriately ashamed. I keep telling myself that I’m just biding my time until I can tell Robbie about LON, but the right moment seems to keep getting farther and farther away.

“Matt?”

My head spins around to Lincoln and I raise my brows. “Hm?”

“Coffee for the road?” he asks, his crooked finger pointing at the espresso machine.

“Oh,” I say, realizing we’ve come to the end of the tour and I’ve missed pretty much everything I’ve been told. Fortunately, these meetings are just a courtesy. All the figures I need to make a decision are in the files on my tablet, but in these situations, the owner will be more likely to sell if they know one of us has taken the time to come and visit their company personally.

“No,” I say. “Thank you. I’d better head off. Thanks for the tour, though. I’ll call Jonah, let him know what I’ve seen and how tight a ship you’re running here, and our legal team will be in touch with yours. Sound good?”

“I can hear the Bahamas calling my name,” he says, grinning. I exchange a firm handshake with him and head out into the lot.

As soon as I’m back in the truck, I pull out my phone and hit the call button next to Jonah’s name. It’s been too long since I checked in, and this deal is nearly ready to be signed.

“Hey man,” he answers. “How’s Smallville?”

“Very funny,” I say. “It’s a nice town. Fresh air. You should try it sometime.”

“I might,” he says. “If my business partner ever gets a deal done up that way, I might stop by to celebrate.”

“I think we’re ready to sign,” I say. “His figures are all good. The building needs some maintenance but I don’t think the surveyors will find much. We should move on the final checks this week—he says he can make the place available any time—and then legal can be in by the start of December. We might be done with the whole thing by Christmas.”

“Oh, there he is,” says Jonah. “I was getting worried you’d decided to abandon me and go live in the mountains.”

“Hah, fat chance,” I say weakly, as it hits me how strangely appealing that sounds. I pause for a moment, wondering whether or not I should ask Jonah what I’m thinking about asking.
