REMORSE

River

River’s eyes burned. The taste of Eli’s blood on her tongue no longer made her gag. In fact, it tasted pretty good. She licked her lips. It wasn’t as delicious as Jonathan’s blood, but it was sweeter than fresh peaches.

River stopped struggling and leaned in to him. “You bit me.”

“I did?” Eli sounded just as stunned as River felt. He lifted his head then touched the wound on her neck. “I did! I bit you.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Wrong mate.

It wasn’t lost on River that her wolf referred to Eli as ‘mate’ instead of ‘man.’ This is wrong. I can’t be Eli’s alpha mate. I can’t.

Her bond to Jonathan was just as strong as it ever was. She still sensed his presence. Still yearned to gaze into his eyes. Still ached to close the distance between them. Still burned at the memory of his dimpled smile, his touch on her skin, his mouth on her lips, his body pressed against hers. Still longed to hear his deep, rumbling laugh. She still loved him more than her own life. His spirit was still the only one bound to hers.

But his body wasn’t the only one she craved.

She gasped at the realization and stepped back. Eli’s bite had changed her. She slapped her hand over the throbbing wound. Blood oozed between her fingers.

Eli grabbed her upper arms and whispered, “Control yourself, woman. People are watching.”

River clenched her trembling fingers into his silk tunic, adding the stain of her blood to his, and nodded.

Eli kissed her forehead.

It felt good. No, better than good. Amazing. And wrong. River closed the distance between them and leaned into Eli as remorse flooded every cell of her body. What have I done?

Eli turned them both to face their guests. “My mate is desirable above all other women. This fresh mark is your witness that she is mine and mine alone. Let no man question it.”

Shula cackled, like the evil witch she was, then jumped up on the stone bench next to the cleansing pool. “Let’s give these two some privacy. Reuben and I prepared a small feast. It’s waiting for you, our esteemed guests, back at his home. Follow me.”

When the last guest disappeared from view, River sank onto the stone bench next to the cleansing pool. “Why did you bite me?”

“I lost control.” Eli swatted a mosquito on his neck.

“Obviously.”

“Why did you bite me so hard?” He touched the still bleeding wound. “It felt like you were trying to rip my throat out.”

“I sort of was.”

“Why?”

“I had to imagine you were Shula in order to force myself to bite you.”

“Am I really that repulsive to you?”

“Not anymore.” River stared at her bloody palm. “Do you feel…different?”

“I expected to be attracted to you once I took your mark, but I had no idea it would be this bad.” His eyes glowed as his gaze wandered over River’s body. “You’re more alluring than the plumpest, most curvaceous woman I can imagine.”

River thought it was just part of his son of Ephraim act when he told their guests that she was desirable above all other women.
