CHAPTER NINE PERCY

“I’m a Dhampir.”

“A what now?”

“A half-Vampire.”

I watched as Sybil tried to make sense of my words. Most Shifters ignored the Vampiric world. I couldn’t necessarily blame them. Vampires were notoriously secretive and preferred to live on the periphery of the supernatural world, policing their own, and only interacting with Shifters, and Witches, and other supes when absolutely necessary.

“Dahmp-peer,” she said, repeating the word phonetically.

“That’s right.”

“And you are a half-Vampire? Like your mom was one, but not your dad?” she asked, her face scrunching up adorably.

“No. Um, here, let’s sit down, and I will try to explain. Dhampirs are not Vampires. We are a sort of subspecies. Half-Vampire beings who require blood to survive, have access to some magic, and enjoy a certain longevity of life.”

“How old are you?” she asked, catching on immediately.

“Older than you, Trouble,” I replied, not wanting to freak her out entirely.

Yeah. Then you better not tell her you were sent to hunt her down and drain her fucking blood to feed your Coven and end an ancient curse then, huh?

I scrubbed a hand over my face and ignored my inner sarcastic asshole. Trouble had a few very key things wrong about what was going on between us, and I owed it to her and to myself to try to figure it out. First things first.

“How much older?” she asked.

“Old enough to know better, but like I told you when we first met, I never had the sense to run from trouble when I was a kid. Why would I start now?”

“Okay, so you are a Dhampir. Does your kind believe in fated mates?” she whispered so softly I barely heard her.

“Yesss,” I replied, dragging out the last sound as I gripped her chin between my thumb and forefinger. “We have legends of fated mates among our kind, though they are rare. There is something you should know, Sybil. My Coven was cursed, and I am not free to choose.”

“Not free? A-are you mated already?”

“What? No,” I said, shaking my head.

Revulsion filled me at the idea of touching another woman, and even though I knew I couldn’t tell her everything I could tell her some of it. Fuck, she deserved so much better than me, but I wasn’t a good enough man to walk away from her. The second I touched her, I was done for. She was mine. Whether or not I could keep her, well, that was another question.

“It’s true, my grandmother arranged for me to be betrothed to a female of our kind. But I have not signed any agreement and I have never touched her, Trouble.”

She closed her eyes, brows furrowing, and I hated the pain I saw etched across her face. Sybil’s breath hitched, and I gave her a small shake, needing her to look at me. But when she opened her eyes, a stream of tears flowed down her cheeks, and I was shocked. Fucking shit that I was, I made her cry. And I never hated myself more.

“So, you have a woman waiting for you back home?” she asked.
