The time had come to kill Kelder O'Brien.

CHAPTER 18

Lis opened her eyes with a start when she heard someone knocking on the door. She sat up and looked around the room for a clock to tell her what time it was. She found none. As the knocking did not stop, she got up from the sofa carefully so as not to wake her little ones and went to the front door of the cabin. With some trepidation and doubting if what she was doing was the right thing, she opened the door, finding herself face to face with a man she did not recognize.

She should not open the door, but curiosity got the better of her. However, she was prepared to attack the wolf if he showed the slightest bit of aggression towards her family. “What's wrong? Kelder is not here,” it was the first thing that crossed her mind.

The man gritted his teeth and narrowed his eyes, before answering her, “I know. Kelder is currently undergoing emergency surgery by our healer.”

Lis, losing stability at what he said, was about to fall to the floor, and had to lean against the wall. What did he mean Kelder is being operated on? What happened? Would he be all right? She couldn't lose him!

She didn't manage to ask anything out loud, she just stared at the wolf without being able to articulate a word. She was unable to find her voice; she just wanted to cry and wake up from this nightmare.

“My name is Emerick, I'm a friend of your...” He shook his head. He was going to say partner, but Kelder already informed him that the union between that woman and he was impossible. “...Of the father of your children,” he decided to refer to him that way, worried when he saw her white as a corpse, trembling and about to faint in front of him. If anything happened to her, his alpha would kill him. “I'm in charge of security in the pack.”

“Well, you haven't done your job well if Kelder is undergoing surgery!” Lis shrieked helplessly. She was worried, on the verge of tears and just wanted to run to wherever her wolf was to be by his side.

Emerick gritted his teeth, holding back the urge to growl at the female. How dare she look so worried after abandoning her friend for years? After breaking his heart and turning him into the cold man he was. “I must take you to him. He doesn't want you to be alone in the cabin.” Kelder's orders before he collapsed in agony on the healer's gurney were very clear: Protect my family. Bring them to me!

There was no need for that woman to throw back in his face what he himself was gnawing inside. He had not fulfilled his mission. He had not protected his friend, his leader, his alpha. He had not arrived in time.

Emerick could never forget what he saw.
