THE WATCHER

Outside North Berwick. United Kingdom.

House of Frost. David’s Cabin.

The cabin door opened, and a tall man stepped into the doorway. The morning sun was directly behind him so that it completely silhouetted him. A sleepy Josie opened her eyes and sat up in bed. Terror overcame her as she realized Gannon had finally tracked her down.

She spoke the ancient chant, summoning her magic. A blue orb of energy formed in her palm, and she hurled it across the cabin, striking Gannon in the stomach. He let out a groan as he doubled over, stumbling backward until he was outside again. But he didn’t fall.

“Was I that disappointing last night? I thought you enjoyed it.”

“James?” Josie threw back the comforter and jumped out of bed. “I’m so sorry. I thought you were my father.”

She rushed to him as he staggered back inside.

“You pack quite a wallop.”

“I’m so sorry,” she repeated, throwing her arms around him, and pulling him into a tight embrace.

“It’s all right. Perhaps I should knock next time,” he said.

“You weren’t disappointing last night, just to be perfectly clear.” She kissed him on the lips. “In fact, I’m ready for round four, or is it five?”

“Four, but that will unfortunately have to wait. I just returned Lily to the stables, and Frost told me David needs help. She and Isabel are waiting for me at the castle.”

“Is everything all right?” Josie asked.

“The werewolf pack is larger than David expected. We’ll join him to even the odds.”

“Do you need my help?”

“No, but I have another assignment for you.” James reached into his jacket pocket and fished out a key. “The key to the castle, my dear, and I’ve secured permission for you to use Frost’s library. I expect to see that parchment deciphered when I return.”

Josie clapped with delight.

“How did you manage it?” she asked.

“I’m not sure, really. I thought Frost would say no. She must be in the giving spirit. Werewolf hunting always puts her in a good mood.”

Josie took the key from James.

“Then I won’t squander this rare opportunity.”

“There’s plenty of food and drink in the castle. I hope to be back tonight or by morning at the latest.”

James kissed her.

“Don’t be too long,” she said. “You know how cold the nights get around here. I need you beside me to keep me warm.”

James smiled.

“Even more motivation to finish this job quickly.”

He kissed her again and then set off for the castle. Josie locked the cabin door, not that a simple lock would keep Gannon out, and took a long shower. She ate another bowl of the beef stew for energy. Then she headed outside, soaking up the sun on a rare cloudless morning.

It was a little more than a mile to the castle. She took a short trail through the woods, which opened onto a vast and gorgeous green field. Unfortunately, it also left her exposed. With every step she took, she was certain Gannon would see her. By the time she reached the castle, she was a bundle of nerves.
