Stewardship Reveals the Heart

While an awareness of the economic forces at work in the culture is good, conformity to the motives or mindsets of culture is evil (Romans 12:1-2). First Timothy 6:9-10 warns that “those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” Snaring temptations await those who long for money and the material possessions money can buy. Notice that the heart is the focus, not money. When the greedy heart lusts after money, it is quickly shot through with arrows of grief.

The apostle Paul lists greed in Romans 1:29-30 alongside other sins such as murder. Proverbs 11:6 says that “the righteousness of the upright will deliver them, but the treacherous will be caught by their own greed.” Though greedy people may accumulate a great amount of worldly wealth, Jesus had this to say about them: “Not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). Our world may be impressed by the size of someone’s bank account, but God isn’t. He is concerned with the heart (1 Samuel 16:7; Jeremiah 17:10; Acts 5:1-11). While wealth cannot make people spiritual, it can reveal their spiritual priorities. As Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
