If you guide your client into this pose, once it is achieved, ask the client to notice how they feel. If they report positive feelings of empowerment, courage, and self-confidence, add BLS to help them more fully integrate the experience the posture evokes.
Power Figures
Another way to develop the resource of wise, healthy power is imagining figures that represent it. You might ask your clients, “When you think of a figure that represents healthy, wise power, what figure comes to mind?” Power Figures can include someone they know personally, or historical, religious, political or sports icons. They can be figures from movies, television shows, or books. Power Figures can include Spiritual Figures such as Kali, the Hindu goddess; Jesus, or Moses. Figures my clients have chosen include Nelson Mandela, Oskar Schindler, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Fredrick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Dalai Lama. I encourage clients to choose figures who integrate power with wisdom and compassion.
Tapping In Power Figures
Have the client close their eyes and go inside. “Take a few moments to bring yourself to the present. Find that still place inside yourself. When you are quiet inside, bring up an image of a figure you associate with power that is expressed with wisdom. It can be someone you know, a historical, religious, spiritual, mythological, political or athletic figure, or a figure from a movie, television show, or book.
“When the image comes to you, bring in more visual details if you can. What does the figure look like? What expression do they have on their face? What posture are they in? What are they doing? You want to evoke as strongly as you can the feeling of strength and power. When you have the image, notice how you feel. Can you feel the sense of power the figure is evoking in you? Where do you feel it in your body?
“With that image and the feelings of power activated, begin to tap. Tap 6 to 12 times. Check in with yourself. If it is getting stronger and it is positive, you can tap longer.
“Now, imagine a situation where you would need to feel powerful. See if you can bring to the situation the power resources you have tapped in. If you can, and if you feel more powerful in the situation, tap to increase the feeling and integrate the resource.” Have the client tap as long as it feels positive and they feel strong.
Overcoming Obstacles:
Developing Resilience and Perseverance
Clients who hit obstacles to their motivation can develop resilience and perseverance by activating and integrating memories of having overcome difficulties in the past. By helping clients to link in times in the past when they were able to accomplish something challenging for them or to move through a difficulty, we help them draw from the strength and power they already have within. For those clients who have difficulty recalling times when they were able to overcome an obstacle, you can use examples of others who have done so. It is important that the examples used are healthy and do not include their addiction.
