Chapter eighteen

Wind and ice collided together making the dark cavernous room filled with a rushing vibration.

"Good. That will take some of the excess burdens away," said Maxon as he nodded his head. "Now concentrate on solely air. Imagine pushing it out as if you were creating a wall.”

Wren took a deep breath and called the air running through her to the palms of her hands. She could feel the strength of it swirling just above her palms. With it, she could cause massive destruction if she wanted it. It would be easy, just a brief stretch of her hand.

Wren pushed the terrible thoughts down into the back of her mind and tried to lessen the amount of air currently pulsating from her. When she was satisfied that she wouldn't bring the dungeon ceiling down on them she stretched out her arms and brought them up and then down, imagining a wall.

She did not release her power as Maxon came towards where she focused her power and reached out a hand as if touching something. "Excellent, Wren. Now try to release the power, but allow a corner of your mind to maintain the wall.”

Wren did as he said, imagining that the wall would remain when she lowered her arms. Wren called back the remaining air into her body and lowered her arms. She let out a curse as soon as she let go, feeling her wall disintegrate with her power.

"You have to clear your mind. You cannot maintain magic if you are distracted,” Maxon explained with infinite patience.

Wren bit back a retort that it was nearly impossible for her to clear her mind. Ever since the king had stared at her with that promise of retribution she had been unable to shake the dread within her. Even last night wrapped up in Kai offered only brief solace. She hadn't voiced her concerns to him as she knew she had no real reason to be so unsettled. The king had threatened her in truth before while this was only a look. It still haunted her whenever she closed her eyes all the same.

"Try calling water and imagining something small like a wine glass." Wren gave him a questioning look. Sometimes Maxon was consumed by his own train of thought that he left out important details as if he thought he had already said them aloud.

Understanding her, he said, "Magic is all about the connection between your mind and your will in addition to the elements themselves. Water can be used to create a mirage of sorts. The more powerful the sorcerer, the more powerful an image. A cup should be child's play for you.”

She could have done without the last sentence, already feeling the pressure to succeed settling on her. Still, She concentrated on calling water into her palms. Water pooled above her hands, ready to be used at her will. She concentrated on the image of a wine glass, imagining each curve and piece. Releasing a small amount of her power she focused on the space in front of her.
