Chapter 12

“I would like you to be here when I confront Professor Burnett. As the King you should hear what he has to say,” Gaius told Ryker. Four days had passed since the trials. The headmaster needed time to address injured students and assist with the evaluation of the results before he even had time to talk to Ryker about what they’d discovered.

Ryker rubbed the back of his neck. It was still odd to him that he was looked to as a leader. He was nothing more than a young Fae trying to get control of his powers. Except no matter how much he wished that would never be true for him. He was in fact the second most powerful Fae in the realm. His Maurelle had more power than any of them knew.

Last night when she lay in his arms it literally seeped from her pores. He and his Guard vowed to protect her from being consumed by this power. It had become extremely clear that they were wearing on her.

Sol pointed it out first, but now all Ryker saw when he looked at her was the pale skin and dull pink of her hair. She was tired all the time and struggled with basic tasks. The five of them continued to practice nightly, and she had barely sent the wind whipping through the room to dry their sweaty bodies after a quick and dirty round of sex.

Shaking his head, Ryker set aside those concerns for later and refocused on the matter at hand. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” Ryker reasoned. Not that he didn’t want to be there. The royalty inside drove him to stick his fingers in nearly everything he encountered. Even when it placed him in danger. The only time he actually paused was when Maurelle was at risk. And even then, she refused to allow him to ignore his calling.

“If he sees me there is no way you will get any useful information from him. We need to know how long this has been going on and what he knows about Savelle’s plans.”

Gaius pursed his lips then shook his head. “If I had to guess, he’s been searching for a way to force the mantle to shift to him. He has systematically destroyed every piece of the royalty in Mag Mell. Is there another ultimate goal? As unoriginal and cliché as it seems. I think every evil being in history has acted because they want power over everyone else.”

Ryker couldn’t help but chuckle at the headmaster’s dry tone. “Good point. Evil must turn your brain to mush. How does he expect to force the Gods’ hands? Does he really think he can pull this off? He’s been at it for hundreds of years from what I can see.”

“The amount of time and care he took is what makes him think he will get away with it. He’s worked slowly and completely behind the scenes. By not claiming his actions and deflecting the bulk of it onto the humans Savelle assumes the Gods will not know what he has done.
