THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS

When the Holy Spirit arrived after Christ’s death and resurrection, the lives of Jesus’ followers were dramatically altered. Many of them had known Jesus personally, but after they received the Spirit of God they were totally transformed. This acute awareness of God’s abiding companionship continued throughout their lives as the Holy Spirit supernaturally empowered them to do things that were impossible without Him.

Human language is inadequate to express who our eternal God is, so we need His divine assistance. Like the early believers, we can experience supernatural understanding concerning spiritual things because the power of the Holy Spirit enlightens us. Jesus promised the first-century believers that they would receive power from heaven to help them understand these mysteries (John 16:13).

This same promise is true for us today. The Bible can be merely words on a page that we store in our minds, or it can be life-giving revelation if we allow the Spirit to speak directly to our hearts. He can take the mysteries of God and translate them into something that we can understand and apply.

The power of the Holy Spirit is also liberating. Paul communicated this to the believers in Rome: “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death” (Romans 8:1-2). The word freed in this passage means set free from the dominion of sin. This means that the Holy Spirit can liberate us from the voices that try to woo us away from our Beloved. But how do we access this power?

We are filled with the Holy Spirit when we accept Christ as our Savior, but many times we don’t know how to access His power. This reminds me of a story my dear friend Bernadette Musakura once told me. Bernadette grew up in a small village in Rwanda where she lived in a hut that had no electricity or running water. Then she had the opportunity to go to boarding school for high school:
