Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs)

CDFIs are private financial institutions dedicated to providing loans to help residents start and promote businesses, assisting families with financing their first homes and investing in local health centers, schools, or community centers.

CDFIs are comprised of community development banks, community development loan funds, and community development venture funds. CDFIs raise capital from individuals and institutions (banks, non-financial institutions (i.e. insurance companies), government, religious institutions, and foundations). There were between 8,000 and 10,000 CDFIs in the U.S. in 2016.
