Chapter Seventeen
Looking around, Fedor shivered. The place felt—sad. A sense of melancholy oppressed him. Although the cavern and lake looked unnaturally different, they weren’t the cause of the feeling. That was something else. He was sure of it.
“We’ll walk for a couple of hours,” Adrianus said. “If we see nothing obvious, then we’ll return to the entrance of the cavern, and you will go back to Thanos with the part of the jewel we have, Fedor.”
Adrianus squeezed Fedor’s shoulder gently. Fedor looked into his beloved’s eyes. Adrianus looked as sad as he felt. The mere thought of being away from his prince made his heart heavy. However, Fedor nodded.
“I understand.”
A torch for Fedor was also lit and in single file they clambered carefully over the rocks that edged the lake. As hard as Fedor tried, he was unable to see either the far side of the lake or how deep into the cavern it went. Leonid led the way with Sandor throwing up the occasional blaze of fire from his fingertips. Adrianus followed them, and Fedor came last.
He made sure to diligently check behind them as Leonid had instructed. He stopped and stared at the water. Ripples. What could have caused them? He’d heard nothing fall, and so far he hadn’t seen any animals. He leaned over staring harder. He thought he saw something red—
“Fedor! Keep up with us, my love.”
He straightened quickly at Adrianus’s shout and scurried quickly to catch up with his friends. He frowned, temporarily lost in his thoughts as he looked around. Nothing else in the cavern had color. What did I see? Did I see anything at all?
“Adrianus, look over there. A boat.” Leonid pointed to another of the small islets that dotted the surface of the lake.
Gazing intently, Fedor followed the direction of Leonid’s finger. There did indeed seem to be a boat. A coracle, big enough for just one man had been pulled onto the rock of the islet. Sandor’s flames showed nothing else on the islet except more of the lichen. Although, Fedor thought that the lichen looked different in some way. However, the flickering light made it difficult for him to see clearly.
As they caught up with him, Leonid had already stripped out of his leathers and shift. “No need for modesty with friends." He gave a grim smile. “Plus, this way I have something to dress in when I dry off.”
“I’m not sure it’s a good idea, Leonid.” Adrianus looked around. “We don’t know what’s in that water.”
“I have my knife. Sandor is watching. We’ve seen no tentacles. No monsters. If the rest of the jewel is on one of these islets, then we have a boat rather than swimming. This islet is within a reasonable swimming distance. We don’t know how far any other may be from the shore.”
“I’m not happy about it either, Adrianus.” Sandor sighed heavily. “But if the islet we do need is a long distance from the shore, better to swim a short distance now than face a longer one later.
