February 16

Today, surprisingly, they gave me a small piece of meat along with the usual insipid broth with noodles. The guard who seldom speaks brought me an apple. I couldn’t eat the meat but I ate the apple ever so slowly, savoring every bite.

My stomach had become unaccustomed to such feasts; I was racked by violent cramps.

Time passed and I heard my cell door open. Three guards came in. I was stripped and then dressed again in another set of clothing.

“So bones is leaving us,” one of the guards remarked. The others laughed.

I had noted the abnormal slimming of my shoulders and hips but it took the guard’s remarks to make me think about how much longer I had to live. I was by then beginning to feel pain all over my body.

The guards led me to a vehicle and, I assumed, they would take me back to the torture house. The few sounds I could identify from the floor of the vehicle were not all that familiar to me and as soon as I realized that the ride was longer than usual I began to fear that “bones is leaving us” meant that I had little time left in this world. I was not prepared for death. I began sobbing unceasingly. The trip must have lasted about three or four hours. Finally, I heard a voice yell, “Halt,” and we came to a stop at what I supposed was a guardhouse.

A guard in the front seat got out of the car and returned promptly. We soon drove on and about five minutes later stopped again. Two men took me out of the car and I sensed that I was in the country; there was a quiet around me and I heard a dog bark in the distance.

I was ushered along a gravel path and taken through a corridor. I was forced to enter a room that I sensed was rather small.

I was strapped onto a bed covered with a thin, quilted fabric. The guards left. I was so relieved that I was not going to be killed. I fell asleep.
