Examine Further Aspects of Renovation

Armstrong encourages us to hear from Nehemiah’s story that the journey is difficult and God seems quiet at times, but there is a way forward once we hear the call. He suggests there are a few things we need to know in order to submit ourselves to God’s renovating power.

Call the group’s attention to the four aspects of renovation you posted before the session.

•Tell somebody about the dream God has given you for renovation.

•Renovation is hard.

•When God calls you to renovate, God is always preparing others, too.

•Renovation requires faith.

Form four small groups or pairs and assign one of the aspects to each small group or pair (or in a very small group, assign questions to individual participants). Ask them to refer to both the Scripture passage (Nehemiah 2:1-18) and the information in Renovate and be prepared to briefly report on their assigned aspect. After a few minutes’ work, come together in the large group and ask each pair or small group to report on their discussion. Ask:

•These aspects or insights about what one needs to know going forward are in many ways counterintuitive in our individualistic, DIY culture. If you had to identify one of these four aspects as the most challenging for you, which one would it be?
