Brax was pissed off and worried. It had been five days. Five. That was one day more than Sabre’s little trip into Hell should have taken.

He paced back and forth along the tree line of the garden on the palace grounds where he now knew a secret tunnel was located. It was one of the ones Sabre had used to gain access to the palace – and to Mikhail – over the years. It was also the one she had used when she had met with him the first time. It held a somewhat sentimental value to him now. And to Sabre, he figured, because she used it when coming and going most of the time. Even though she could simply walk out the front gate.

“She’s fine,” Draven said from behind Brax where he was sitting on the ground with Styx’s head on his lap.

Brax stopped his pacing and glared at his friend. “You don’t know that.”

Draven arched a single eyebrow, his demeanour unflappable in the face of Brax’s tension. “Nothing short of an atomic bomb could stop that woman. And even then, I have a feeling it wouldn’t be enough. Much like a cockroach.”

“This isn’t a joke, Draven,” Brax snapped back. Styx’s head lifted and he whined, ears flattening back against his skull. Brax sighed, feeling like shit. “Come here, boy.” Styx got up and walked swiftly to Brax’s side, leaning his substantial weight against his legs. “I’m just worried about Sabre,” he told the hellhound.

“I wasn’t being flippant,” Draven said. He stood as well and dusted off his pants, even though there was no need. It was as if the pristine angel deflected the dirt and the leaves just by breathing. “She is capable.”

“I know that. But she’s not indestructible. I should have gone with her,” Brax declared. He would have but the logistics just plain didn’t work. He had all manner of kingly crap to do, but what’s more, there was no way Sabre and Draven could have survived a road trip together. Even thinking about the prospect had been enough for Sabre to break out in hives.

“It’s not your task,” Draven informed Brax, responding to his previous statement.

Unfortunately, it was the wrong thing to say. Brax rounded on his angel. “Not my task? To be there for my partner? To support her? To make sure she’s safe?”
