“Now I’m going to have everybody up my ass because of him,” sighed Gigi.

Before the staged accident, she was just a face in the crowd. Now, for some reason, her co-workers were all staring at her. Lisett decided to take pity on Grayson. She had been watching his every step since that morning. She knew that he really didn’t want to let her out of his sight. She also knew it had a lot more to do with his desire to protect her. He was also jealous. She smiled at the thought that Grayson was experiencing that feeling for the first time. He never cared enough for the countless of faceless women he spent his time with over his long life. They were just things to help pass the many years with. There was never any true attachment. Why should he, knowing that he was eternal and the women weren’t?

She waved for Gigi to fall back to let the others crowd onto the elevator, leaving them to catch the next one.

“I agree that my cousin can be a clueless ass, but his reason went a little further than just what he said. He was laying the foundation of what was to come for his people.” She saw the look of confusion on Gigi’s face. She knew that her friend wasn’t dumb. She knew what she would be admitting to before she even spoke the words.

“All of the people that work here...most of them are all under Grayson’s rule.”

Gigi took a step back in awe. Lisett gave her a second to process the fact before she continued. “He has created businesses, communities, hospitals, even banks that employ and cater to our needs if we desire to use them. Of course, you have those that chose not to, and these companies employ and service humans too.”

Gigi worked her mouth a few times without uttering a word. Her mind was working too much to allow for her to be able to voice her thoughts. For the first time, she asked the question that had been pushed to the burner until now. The loud bing of the elevator sounded before the shiny gold doors opened. Neither one made a move to get on.

“How long has he been controlling things behind the scenes?”

Lisett smirked at the hint of anger in her friend’s voice. She shook her head sadly.

“That’s not what he’s done.”

“Bullshit! I work in his company. He been fucking with my mind. He—”

Lisett held up her hand. “Yes, all those things are true, but he hasn’t been controlling you. If he was, you never would have gotten with that asshole, Toni. Can we sit down?” she asked, walking over to a bistro-type table set for those that wanted to eat in the lobby. The tabled overlooked a large manmade pond. A huge fountain that sprayed water out of the vase that an angel held in her concrete arms added beauty to the outside grounds.

“He’s known about you for six years. During that time, he hasn’t interfered in your life.
