Chapter 5

“THAT WAS something else,” Henry said as they got down from the truck after spending hours at a fire.

They were all covered in sweat and soot. The fire had been at a facility with a lot of paper, apparently it was records storage, so the amount of ash had been unbelievable.

“Tell me about it,” Morgan groaned.

“Ayers, you have a visitor,” the captain on duty said. “Go on up now.”

“Thanks.” He got out of his fire clothes and hurried upstairs, where he found Angus waiting for him. “Have you been waiting long?”

“No. I left your captain a message, and he called when you were on your way back.” They went into the conference room and closed the door. “I have some news for you. We did get a good print from the gas can that was left at your house, but we don’t have a match to anyone at the moment. Antonio and I are working to widen our search for an identity, but it’s very slow going.”

Morgan nodded. “I appreciate that, but you could have just called.”

“I know. I also wanted to see how things were with Richie.”

Morgan shrugged. “I have no idea. I can feel him pulling away. He’s quiet and keeping mostly to himself.” He didn’t go into details, like that Richie had taken to going to bed early and closing his door. “I keep wondering what I did. He’s making calls to try to find an apartment of his own, and in a way I can’t blame him for that.”

“I take it you don’t want him to leave,” Angus said.

“No. I like having him there. You know how nice it is to come home to a house that isn’t empty and to have someone happy to see you.”

Skepticism filled Angus’s eyes. “Is that the only reason you want him there? Because if it is, then Richie’s doing the right thing.”

“No, it isn’t,” Morgan answered forcefully.

“Then maybe you can explain it to me. This is someone you haven’t seen in years and just met again when you rescued him during a fire a week ago. I don’t understand the attachment you have to him.”

Morgan stood up and walked to the window. “I can’t explain it either. I saw Richie again, and everything felt right. It’s like he’s the other half of me. I just know it.”

“Okay. Let’s say you’re right. Are you the other half of him?” Angus asked. “Just because you feel something doesn’t mean he does. And Richie has been through a lot—it’s written on his face and on his body. He isn’t going to accept things as easily as you seem to.”

“But….”

“Just think about it. I could be wrong, but he needs to know something, and I wish I could tell you what it is.”

“Thanks. You’ve been a big help.”

“I don’t have all the answers. You need to flounder in the dark the same as the rest of us. But if you want my advice, talk to him, really talk, and that means you
