Chapter 7

Roni braced herself for the inevitable tongue-lashing for stealing a ship, gallivanting off on her own unauthorized mission, losing the ship, and doing it all with her father's best friend's daughter in tow. "I'm so sorry, Dad. I just—”

Captain Bob Devereaux held up his hand to silence her. "I'm not mad."

"You're... not?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, I am," Patrick Alexander said, leaning down into view next to Bob. "Zadria, I expected more of you. You stole a ship!"

Zadria's eyes widened at the sudden appearance of her father. "I... uh..."

"There's time to settle all of this later," Bob interrupted. "Right now, there's something we need to discuss. The rebels have relied on intel from 'The Listener' for years."

The Finn standing next to Roni groaned, in sync with an off-screen groan, presumably from Naked Finn on Bob's side.

Bob didn't bat an eye. Instead, he continued, "But, now, it seems some kind of super-soldiers are systematically wiping out stations as they come across them. Finn has asked for our help, and, as he has done countless favors for the rebels, we accepted the call."

Roni sighed. "I'm going to have to help him, aren't I?"

"We'd appreciate it," Patrick said. "We've dispatched teams to various stations to help with repositioning. However, that may not be enough. We'd also like to eliminate the threat, if possible."

"That's where you... three?" Bob seemed to notice Ryan for the first time. "Is that Ryan Sloan?"

"Yeah, we picked him up on Hera. Something's wrong with his noggin, though," Roni said, knocking on Ryan's head.

He batted her hand away. "Good to see you again, sir."

Bob greeted him with a nod. "I'm glad you're with them. We need the three of you to hunt down the threat. We'll handle relocating, repositioning, and restocking the other stations."

"Oh, thank goodness." Roni sighed with relief, thankful that they wouldn't need to return to the spider planet.

"Based on the bases they've hit, we have a pretty good idea of where they're going next," Bob continued. "We'll send you the coordinates. We'll need you to intercept the soldiers and stop them. You're the closest team we've got to their next estimated targets."

Roni nodded. A tinge of excitement ran through her. Her father didn’t usually task her with these types of missions, not without some kind of chaperone present anyway. "We will do our best. But Z says their ship is a Class 8 Bolt. Will our ship be able to keep pace with that?"

Patrick looked impressed, and Zadria's cheeks reddened slightly.

"No," said the Finn standing next to Roni. "But I have something that might."

"Then it's settled," Bob said.

"There's just one thing that I don't understand," Ryan butted in. "If all the stations are connected, then why do they keep hitting them? Wouldn't they be able to get everything they need from just one?"

"Oh, oh, I know the answer to this one!" The Finn next to Roni hopped in place and raised his hand. "Yes, in general each station is connected to all the others. However, each also has a secret, off-line cache of all the juiciest secrets we've collected over the years.
