Even with my new song filling me with energy, I know I can’t catch them. They must have had one hell of a head start on me, because I’m moving faster than most birds can fly.

When I see the tall walls of Gilant city ahead, I stop on a nearby hill and take a good look. I’ve never been this close to it before.

Immediately, exhaustion crashes down on top of me. I wasn’t brimming over with energy—I was merely holding the fatigue at bay. I actually drop to my knees under the force of it and to my shock, I can’t stop myself falling flat on the ground.

All of this, just so I can be here too late? What the fuck.

All I can do for a short while is take long, slow breaths. The sensation of weakness passes and again, I hear a strange melody in my head.

“I’m not trying that again,” I mutter, as I get up. I have no idea what the price is for using this strange song. I know that when Reapers manifested powers, they also hurt themselves. Many of them died from internal injuries when they tried to use telekinesis.

The sun is beginning to sink towards the horizon, a bright orange glow spreading across the pale blue sky. There aren’t many rainy days on Kurse, and clouds are often light. This makes for some pretty impressive sunsets.

As the shadows lengthen, concealing me, I trot slowly towards the walls. Most of our cities have defenses, but Gilant is more protected than the others. The tall, thick walls surround the entire city and there are only a few entry points. At the moment, those are open, but they can be slammed shut at any time with huge, spiky metal doors that swing down vertically.

I prowl along the wall, keeping out of sight from the sentries. I can’t be seen, and I can’t enter the city. Not only will I be recognized immediately as an outsider and slaughtered, the Gilant would probably go after my clan for the insult.

“It had to be the Gilant,” I mutter to myself. The Sarfyn can be reasoned with, sometimes. They hate us for our excess just like they hate the Gilant for their savagery, but it is possible to bargain with them.

After making a complete ring of the city, it’s completely dark. Guards walk the tops of the wall, changing shifts every few hours. Even nastier looking Reapers are manning each entrance to the city. These guys are obviously paranoid about being attacked.

But why? No one has ever come at them. What do they have that we could possibly want?

I retreat into the nearby hills. It’s only from there that I see the ring of torches lit around the town square.

And my woman is tied to a post on a stone podium right in the center.

Gal's in full view of the royal palace. It doesn’t look like there are many Reapers watching her, but she is in full view of all the surrounding buildings.
