I didn’t go back to Bible college. I took a left turn. I was a young man who thought I was in love and I made a mistake.

SHAUN: I talk to my own kids about when we get to an age where we actually have a little bit of wisdom. I think we can all look back on our teenage years and as we’re in our twenties, we think we know so much or we think we understand a lot. I’m 42 right now and I feel like I’m to a place now where I have enough life experience and enough knowledge that I have a little bit of wisdom, but boy we sure think we have an awful lot of wisdom and an ability to make good decisions when we’re young. I think a lot of the audience can relate to that aspect of your story.

Let’s fast forward now into 1978, which is the year I was born, actually. You’re 26, working at a car dealership, and it sounds like you were doing fairly well in terms of sales. Then all of a sudden you get this strange pain in your leg that you’re trying to avoid, but it just won’t go away.

IVAN: Let’s add a little bit more to that straight away. It was a gradual thing, but by the time I turned 21, I started drinking and started smoking pot. And then I found out what crystal meth was like, what cocaine was like, and when I tell you I took a wrong path, I just did. Now I was working. I was doing great at my job. I was making six figures back in the seventies, and I was selling cars and I was doing it legitimately, having fun with customers. They didn’t have to worry about the customer coming back, getting upset. There were new cars, mostly, that I sold and I loved it. I was doing great. You know, I’d probably make about $117,000 a year or something around there. And I was probably making that much more on the side on the drugs, to be blunt with you.

I was into dancing, I was into doing these things. Then all of a sudden my left calf started swelling up on me. I thought, “Man, this is a bad Charlie horse.” I kept thinking it was bad. I went to a doctor finally, and the doctor told me, “Hey,” he says, “you’ve got thrombophlebitis.”

Now I’ll be blunt with you. When I first heard that word, I thought he said I had a trombone in my legs. I’m like, “Trombone, trombone, what’s he talking about?” I’d never heard that word before. He started telling me what a blood clot is. And I’m like, I don’t have blood clots. I’m 26. My grandfather has blood clots. That’s what old people get. You always hear about it. You know? And I just got up off of the table and left his office and thought, “Well, whatever.”

He kept telling me, “Hey, listen, it’s serious.
