At least I can’t hurt anyone anymore. Theron wrapped his arms around his knees and leaned against the wall as he waited for Tony’s return. The tenderness between them had shattered at his proclamation, and now Theron’s head was swimming with the possibilities between them. He hadn’t considered for a second that Tony had been lying when he said he didn’t care. Sure, he had known they had chemistry, but chemistry and caring were two very different things.

“I not only killed my Cranes but any hope I had of being with Tony. Fucking brilliant, Theron,” he muttered to himself. The tears fell freely now, unchecked. He wallowed in his misery because he was lost and had no idea how to find himself again. “Let me find you,” Tony had said. Theron didn’t know if he even knew how to let him do that.

Tony’s voice in the doorway made him jump. “You were right to tell me.” Theron hadn’t realized he’d come back. “I was angry before. But you finally told me something real, and honesty should be rewarded.”

“I didn’t mean to tell you that much.”

Tony shrugged. “I know. But I also know that you wanted to tell me for a while now.” He pulled Theron to his feet. “Come here.”

Theron swayed into Tony without meaning to. He felt raw, vulnerable. He just wanted someone to hold him. “Salvatore hates me now, right?”

Tony shook his head. “No. I don’t know if Salvatore is capable of hating you. He feels sorry for you and sympathizes with you, but he forgives you for contemplating killing him. He also wanted me to tell you that your Cranes are safe. Ger and Ally got them out of Desmond’s palace. He just got word. Aren’t you glad you didn’t try to kill him in the meantime?”

“Thank gods,” Theron whispered, getting dizzy with relief. “Oh thank gods. It’s over.”

“Shhh,” Tony said, pulling him into his arms. “I’ve got you now.” He sighed, paused. “How did you communicate with him?”

Theron shook his head. He didn’t want to talk right now. “I want to see them first. You still might be lying.”

Tony looked like he’d been slapped, and his arms dropped away in an instant. “Excuse me? I have not been the one who has been untrustworthy.”

“I have to make sure they’re all right!”

“You have my damn word, Theron. That should be enough. Trust me.”

Theron leaned his forehead on Tony’s shoulder. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry, Theron,” Tony murmured. “You can tell me.”

“Please, Tony. Let me rest. Please.” Everything was just too much today. After months of holding it together, he just couldn’t.

Instead of pushing like he thought he would, Tony just gathered him up in his arms and took him over to his bed. He pulled down the covers and tucked Theron in. Without being asked, Tony climbed in beside him and commanded he sleep. The exhaustion he felt finally overwhelmed him, and the comforting feel of Tony’s arms wrapped around him sent him almost instantly into a deep, dreamless slumber.
